Pictures from Mississippi

We have visited Mississippi a few times. The first time we drove along Natchez Trace Parkway from Tupelo to Natchez. At a rest area we met a local guy who asked us where we were from, and what we were doing out there in the middle of nowhere? To our statement that we were on vacation, he had only one comment: "Here?" He calmed down when we explained that we were bound for New Orleans and only passing through!

Sardis Dam not far from Oxford in northwestern Mississippi, was the first place we stopped on the way from Memphis to Tupelo
Natchez Trace is almost gone, but along the Parkway, you can see a few remnants of the old trail.
Everywhere, both here and elsewhere in the South, you find the ever growing Kudzu plant, which gradually covers more and more land.
Although kudzu can look like beautiful sculptures, it is an invasive species that must be controlled, because it eliminates the usual vegetation, and is very difficult to eradicate.
From the cliff above the river in Natchez, you have an excellent view of the Mississippi. On the opposite side of the river, in Louisiana, the landscape is more flat.
Natchez has a number of large antebellum houses. Before the Civil War 75% of America's millionaires had a house in the city.
Stanton House is one of the city's old houses. Here the indoor scenes from Mount Royal Plantation in the television series North & South were recorded. The outdoor scenes were recorded in South Carolina at Boone Hall Plantation
Along the Mississippi coast runs the old U.S. Route 90. It follows the coast of the Gulf of Mexico most of the way through the state. Even on a hot, sunny summer day, there is plenty of space on the wide beaches.
